The legend from the Napa Valley, which was launched in the late 1970s by wine icons Philippe de Rothschild and Robert Mondavi, marvellously combines the elegant finesse of Bordeaux with the opulence and suppleness of a great Napa Cabernet. The 2018 shows lush notes of ripe black berries, tobacco and precious woods. The tannins are ripe and polished. The bouquet is reminiscent of dark chocolate and is characterised by 84% Cabernet Sauvignon, with a finish of violets and cedar wood.

For many, Robert Mondavi is still considered both a pioneer and an icon of American winemaking. The family had lived in California since the 1920s, and acquired a winery there. In a dispute, Mondavi left the business to found the Robert Mondavi Winery in Oakville in 1966 at the age of 53 - and to reinvent California as the home of excellent wines.
