You may be wondering why there’s yet another online wine shop – Pese Wein. Well, we’ve set out to do this because we want to offer you added value. And because our passion for wine is nothing new. We may be new, but we’ve actually been around for a long time: as the Hanse-Lounge in Hamburg.
The Hanse-Lounge is a classic business club in Hamburg. You’ve probably seen the sort of place in British films. You become a member, pop in for lunch or dinner, meet up with business partners or friends, and enjoy a glass of wine on many an occasion.
Michael Kutej and Erich Wagner founded this club in 2003. The entrepreneur Erich Wagner is the typical sort to frequent such a lounge, whilst Michael Kutej is a born maître d’.
He is the sort of host you rarely come across these days. And when you do, they tend to be from Austria. Just like him. His Carinthian parents were restaurateurs, and he learnt his trade in renowned establishments in Germany and California before finally settling in Hamburg.
The Hanse-Lounge was a stroke of luck for him. For 20 years now, he has been able to showcase his full repertoire there. This includes his passion for wine, which quickly becomes apparent when you take a look at the club’s wine list.
At some point, however, his guests and club members no longer wanted to drink the wines he’d curated just on the premises, but also at home. They wanted to serve them to their own guests or give them as gifts.
This led first to a mailing list and eventually to the idea of opening up the range to club members – and ultimately to everyone, including you. It’s clear that Pese can’t manage the wine on his own.
That’s why there’s a whole team.
This team includes, amongst others, Managing Director Stephan Schroeder and sommelière Eileen Wehling.
And then, of course, there are a few people working behind the scenes who are keen to provide you with all the information you need.
Together, we’ve developed a curated selection for you, based on expertise honed over many years, which always has surprises in store for you and whose quality you can rely on.
