What makes a top-rated wine stand out?

A high rating is, first and foremost, the assessment of a professional wine taster. Among other things, the quality, balance, complexity, length and ageing potential of a wine are evaluated. Origin, grape variety and style can vary greatly: an elegant Riesling can receive a top rating just as easily as a powerful Bordeaux, a great Burgundy or a mature Champagne.

This is precisely why wine ratings are a useful guide. They make it easier to discover exceptional wines amongst a vast international selection. However, a score is no substitute for personal taste. A highly rated wine is not automatically the one you will personally enjoy the most.

Our recommendation is therefore: use ratings as an indicator of quality – and also pay attention to the wine’s origin, grape variety, vintage and style.

Parker, Suckling and Falstaff – three leading voices in the world of wine

Parker and The Wine Advocate
The so-called Parker points are among the best-known wine ratings worldwide. The rating system established by Robert Parker is now continued by the tasters at The Robert Parker Wine Advocate.

Particularly high scores indicate wines of exceptional quality, complexity and expressiveness. Wines at the top end of the rating scale are consequently highly sought after – especially when several international critics independently arrive at similarly high ratings.

James Suckling
James Suckling also rates wines on a 100-point scale. Wine lovers come across his ratings very frequently, particularly in relation to top international wines. Bordeaux, Italy and numerous New World wine regions are among the areas regularly tasted by his team.
On our product pages, you will find the relevant Suckling rating listed directly alongside each wine and can compare it with other ratings.

Falstaff
Falstaff is one of the best-known wine and lifestyle publications, particularly in German-speaking countries. Here, too, wines are rated on a 100-point scale.
Falstaff is of particular interest to wine lovers because, in addition to top international wines, many wines from Germany and Austria are regularly tasted and rated.

Frequently Asked Questions about Wine Ratings

What do 90, 95 or 100 points mean for wine?

As a general rule, the closer a rating is to 100 points, the more exceptional the critic considers the wine to be. In the major international rating systems, scores of 90 points or more already indicate wines of a very high quality. Many truly outstanding wines fall within the 95-point range and above.

100 points is the highest possible score. It is awarded only to wines that the critic in question classifies as exceptional within their rating system.

It is important to compare the ratings: the systems and personal tasting styles of Parker (or The Wine Advocate), James Suckling and Falstaff differ. Two critics therefore do not necessarily have to arrive at exactly the same result. However, several very high scores in particular can be an interesting indication that a wine has impressed across different tasting criteria

What are Parker points?

Parker points refer to the 100-point rating system popularised by Robert Parker. Today, the ratings for the Robert Parker Wine Advocate are compiled by an international team of specialist wine critics.

Is a score of 90 points good for a wine?

a. In the well-known international rating systems, scores of around or above 90 points already indicate a very high standard of quality. The higher the score, the more exceptional the critic’s assessment is.

What does a wine rating of 100 points mean?

100 points is the highest possible score within a 100-point system. Such a rating is correspondingly rare and indicates a wine that the critic in question considers to be exceptional.

Which highly rated wine is right for me?

Scores help with the initial selection. However, style and occasion are at least as important for genuine enjoyment.
Those who prefer elegant and mineral wines may find what they’re looking for in Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay or great Burgundies. Lovers of structured red wines might look out for Bordeaux, Cabernet Sauvignon, Sangiovese, Tempranillo or Syrah, amongst others. And for special occasions, highly rated champagnes and other fine sparkling wines are ideal. So, in addition to the rating, please also take note of our information on the origin, grape variety, vintage and character of each wine.
