Falstaff reviews

There is great news from Falstaff. You probably know it! The magazine is one of the best-known in the German-speaking wine world and regularly publishes wine reviews as well as numerous articles. This year's fourth and fifth editions include a whole series of our exclusive Pese wines. We are delighted with the excellent ratings!

In the shortlist of the fourth issue of Falstaff, the following wines were rated by editor-in-chief Dr. Ulrich Sautter:

2022 Anniversary No.1
Birkweiler Riesling dry
Dr Wehrheim Winery

Herbaceous and spicy on the nose, rich in nuances: lemon balm, red Kampot pepper, a hint of Fuder. On the palate, a very complete Riesling with a character of origin: supple and at the same time taut in acidity, with a lively, tactile minerality and a sweetness that emphasises the fruit. Great length!

2019 Infinity Grande Cuvée
Site 08
Albrecht Schwegler Winery

Noble woods on the nose: gingerbread and cigar box, cinnamon. Then fruity series: Plum, maraschino cherry. Cranberry. The palate is full-bodied and relaxed at the same time, with a good amount of fine-grained tannins that are never astringent, with warmth and fullness without heaviness. Juiciness, acidity and tactile mineral notes are already emerging from behind the dense texture and will lead to a rounding of supreme elegance as the wine matures in the bottle. Outstanding length.

The following wines made it onto the shortlist for the fifth edition of Falstaff:
All these wines are available exclusively from Pese Wein!

2021 Godramstein Kalkmergel
Pinot Blanc, Münzberg winery

Open floral scent, clover honey, straw flowers, flax, also some crab apple. On the palate, the wine has good weight, plenty of substance for a single-vineyard wine, a firm but well-integrated acidity typical of the vintage and a compact finish that shows the ripe varietal type.

2019 Anniversary No.1 Sparkling
German sparkling wine Pinot extra brut
Winery am Klotz

A fine, autolytic, spicy patina, but also notes of red berries such as hazelnut and milk chocolate from the wood. Powerful mousseux on the palate, strong body and well-integrated acidity with a chalky-mineral background. More of a food companion than an aperitif!

92 out of 100 points

2022 Fellbach Sauvignon blanc dry,
Weingut Aldinger

Rich in nuances on the nose: some wood, some red gooseberry, mirabelle plum. Not a loud Sauvignon. Opens smoothly on the palate, then develops a fine phenolic character and an acidity that blends perfectly with the body. Finishes aromatic, but with ripe fruit rather than greenish-spicy flavours.

2021 Bockstein Alte Reben
Riesling Kellermeister-Edition,
Weingut von Othegraven

Spontaneous, a hint of blossom honey, crushed coriander seeds, aniseed, flint and almost iodine undertones. The palate flows calmly and roundly, but hides a lot of extract under its harmonious surface, acidity, substance and tactile minerality provide underlying tension and awaken the imagination for further development in the bottle, a firm but not green Saar Riesling acidity forms the backbone. Finesse and depth!

94 out of 100 points

2021 Anniversary No. 1 Grenache
Louis et Cherry Barruol (Domaine St. Cosme)

Dark chocolate, rum pot and blueberry muffin, buttery notes. Soft and viscous on the palate, but also some fire and very fine tannins of good maturity. The juicy fruit on the finish balances out the strong alcohol.
