Tempranillo grape variety
Tempranillo is a red grape variety that is mainly grown in Spain and forms the basis of many well-known Spanish wines, such as in Rioja and Ribera del Duero. The early-ripening vine generally produces wines with a strong, deep red colour and aromas of red fruits such as cherries and plums as well as spices such as cinnamon and cloves. The tannins are usually medium-bodied and the acidity is moderate, which makes the wines a pleasant accompaniment to many dishes. Tempranillos are often matured in oak barrels, which deepens their flavour - and also gives them enormous ageing potential. Depending on the place of origin and ageing, the wines can have very different flavour profiles, from light and fruity to heavy and extremely complex. The grape variety is also known in Portugal, where it is cultivated as Tinta Roriz.
