Tempranillo grape variety

Tempranillo is a red grape variety that is mainly cultivated in Spain and forms the basis of many well-known Spanish wines, such as in Rioja and Ribera del Duero. The early-ripening vine usually produces wines with a strong, deep red colour and aromas of red fruits such as cherries and plums as well as spices such as cinnamon and cloves. The tannins are usually medium-bodied and the acidity is moderate, which makes the wines a pleasant accompaniment to many dishes. Tempranillos are often matured in oak barrels, which deepens their flavour - and also gives them enormous ageing potential. Depending on the place of origin and ageing, the wines can have very different flavour profiles, from light and fruity to heavy and extremely complex. The grape variety is also known in Portugal, where it is cultivated as Tinta Roriz.

Frequently asked questions (FAQ) about Tempranillo wine

What characterises the Tempranillo grape variety?

Tempranillo is Spain's most important red wine variety and characterises top wines such as Rioja and Ribera del Duero. It ripens early and produces powerful, deep red wines with flavours of cherry, plum and spices such as cinnamon and cloves. The wines have medium tannins, moderate acidity and are often matured in oak barrels, which gives them complexity and great ageing potential.

What is Tempranillo?

Tempranillo is probably the best-known grape variety in Spain and the centrepiece of many top wines from Rioja and Ribera del Duero. The name is derived from the Spanish temprano ("early") - the grape ripens earlier than many other red wine varieties.

Where does Tempranillo wine come from?

The grape variety has its roots in Spain, where it has been cultivated for centuries. The Rioja, Ribera del Duero, Navarra and Toro growing regions are particularly famous. Tempranillo is now also appreciated in Portugal (known as Tinta Roriz or Aragonês) and overseas.

Which wineries produce the best Tempranillo wines?

Some renowned producers are:

- Bodegas Vega Sicilia (Ribera del Duero)
- La Rioja Alta (Rioja)
- Marqués de Riscal (Rioja)
- Pesquera (Ribera del Duero)
- Numanthia (Toro)

What does a typical Tempranillo wine taste like?

A Tempranillo is characterised by a medium to full body, soft tannins and balanced acidity. The flavour ranges from fruity and fresh (red berries, cherry, plum) to complex and mature (leather, tobacco, vanilla, dried fruit), depending on the ageing process.

What foods does Tempranillo go best with?

- Tapas, jamón ibérico and chorizo

- Grilled meat, lamb and beef
- Mediterranean dishes with tomatoes and peppers
- Matured cheeses such as Manchego
In short: Tempranillo is a real all-rounder when it comes to food pairing

What are the best vintages for Tempranillo?

The vintages vary depending on the region, but the following are particularly outstanding in Rioja and Ribera del Duero, for example:

- 2001, 2004, 2005
- 2010, 2011
- 2015, 2016
- 2019 and 2020 for fresh, modern styles

How long can you store a Tempranillo wine?

- Joven (young, without wood): 1-2 years

- Crianza (at least 2 years, 1 of which in the barrel): 5-7 years
- Reserva (at least 3 years, including 1 in barrel): 8-12 years
- Gran Reserva (at least 5 years, including 2 in barrel): 15 years and longer
A high-quality Tempranillo develops exciting ageing flavours over the years

What flavours can you recognise in a Tempranillo wine?

- Young & fresh: cherry, strawberry, redcurrant

- Matured: plum, dried fig, leather, tobacco, chocolate
- Wood maturation: vanilla, coconut, coffee, cedar wood

What distinguishes Tempranillo from other red wine varieties?

Compared to Cabernet Sauvignon or Syrah, Tempranillo is often softer, more elegant and more versatile. It combines fruit and flavour without being overly tannic, making it suitable for many occasions.

How should Tempranillo be served?

- Drinking temperature: 16-18 °C

- It is best to decant 30-60 minutes before drinking, especially Reserva or Gran Reserva.
- Serve in bulbous red wine glasses to allow the flavours to fully develop
