Castello di Ama
About 20 kilometres northeast of Siena is this small settlement, which has pre-Roman roots. The Etruscans already settled here. Today's fort was built in the early 1770s.
This Chianti is produced from grapes from the 4 legendary single vineyards of Castello di Amas - Bellavista, Casuccia, San Lorenzo and Montebuoni - and also bears the proud status of a "Gran Selezione'. Sangiovese, how could it be otherwise, naturally takes centre stage with 80%, surrounded and aromatically complemented by Malvasia Nera and Merlot. A potpourri of red and dark fruits - cherry and blackberry in particular - forms the basis of this exceptional Chianti, surrounded by a highly varied spiciness. Cedar wood, star anise, macchia herbs, mint, white pepper and violets. Ageing in barriques adds further flavour and tannin. An aromatic hotchpotch and yet of the highest harmony.
