South Australia, Australia, Rotwein, wine cuvée 0.75 l
Penfolds "Koonunga Hill" Shiraz Cabernet has been the entry-level wine since 1976 and is a prime example of the Penfolds style and philosophy. The wine is sourced from vineyards throughout South Australia - in this vintage from Barossa Valley, McLaren Vale, Langhorne Creek and Padthaway. The cuvée is characterised by a full-bodied style with the fruit of Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon, the region's signature grape varieties. It was matured in large oak barrels. The purple-red wine combines Christmas spices with blackberry, raspberry, cherry plum and a hint of cassis along with Earl Grey and soy sauce. On the palate, the wine is juicy and smooth with a successful umami flavour and fine acidity.
The place of origin and "spiritual home" of the Penfolds Winery is the Magill Estate, just a few minutes from Adelaide. in 1844, Christopher and Mary Jenfeld planted vine cuttings that they had taken with them on their trip to Australia.
