Castello di Ama
About 20 kilometres northeast of Siena is this small settlement, which has pre-Roman roots. The Etruscans already settled here. Today's fort was built in the early 1770s.
"Sangiovese with a twist' is the recipe for success of the single-vineyard Chiantis from Castello di Ama. While a fifth of Merlot contributes this twist to the smaller "La Casuccia' vineyard, the selection of the best grapes from the larger Bellavista vineyard is made from Malvasia Nera, which makes up 20% of the Sangiovese. The result is no less - perhaps even a little more - convincing. The "Bellavista' is bursting with juice and vigour. Sangiovese sour cherry meets all kinds of Mediterranean herbs, spicy wood and the finest tannins from the ageing process. Just 4500 to 6000 bottles of this wine are made, if at all, as it is only produced in good years.
