Castello di Ama
About 20 kilometres northeast of Siena is this small settlement, which has pre-Roman roots. The Etruscans already settled here. Today's fort was built in the early 1770s.
A single-vineyard Chianti at the level of one of the best Merlots in the world - how does that work? Quite simply by being produced by the same makers in the same cellar. The legendary Castello di Ama in the Chianti village of Gaiole produces an unrivalled Chianti from 80% Sangiovese and 20% Merlot in the "La Casuccia' vineyard. Nothing could be further removed from the old, outdated image of the bast basket pizza wine than this giant, whose 2019 edition was worth 100 points to Italian wine critic Antonio Galloni. This wine is incredibly dense and powerful, with intense spice and minerality combining with a firework of flavours of almost epic proportions to create the utmost complexity.
