Castello di Ama
About 20 kilometres northeast of Siena is this small settlement, which has pre-Roman roots. The Etruscans already settled here. Today's fort was built in the early 1770s.
With the precision of Swiss clockwork, the "Vigna L'Apparita' vineyard, which covers just 3 hectares, produces an exceptional Merlot year after year. The 2020 vintage was worth 97 and 98 points to James Suckling and Falstaff respectively. Meticulous vineyard work, poor clay soil and a year and a half of ageing in up to 25% new barriques have produced a wine of almost exuberant flavour. One is inclined to say "lots of everything' and finds green pepper, paprika and mint alongside lush blackberry, plum and dark cherry flavours. There is also an almost Christmassy mix of vanilla, cinnamon and a little clove - and of course that certain meatiness that characterises this world-class Merlot year after year. A rare and unforgettable experience.
