Castilio Ygay is a Rioja icon that comes exclusively from the single vineyard La Plana, a high plateau not far from the winery, which is planted with ancient vines. It is only produced in special years and only comes onto the market after a long ageing period in barrels and bottles. The 2009 consists of approx. 80% Tempranillo and 20% Mazuelo. Like all Ygays, this vintage is made for eternity. But it is already showing its astonishing ability to combine the sheer power of the old vines with incredible finesse. The wine shows impressive depth and great complexity, with an incredible versatility in the glass that few wines in the world can match!

The beginning of the Marqués de Murrieta winery near Logroño is also the origin of the Rioja growing region. In 1852, it was Don Luciano Murrieta who produced the first Rioja here using the techniques he had learned in Bordeaux. This first vintage was exported to Mexico and Cuba. Since 1983, the winery has been run by the Cebrián-Sagarriga family.
