Winery Dr. Wehrheim Kastanienbusch Köppel Spätburgunder GG 2020

As with the Mandelberg, trees on the edge of the vineyard gave the site its name. The Pinot Noir from Dr Wehrheim that grows there comes from the Köppel vineyard on the eastern edge of the GG site. While the rest of the Kastanienbusch is dominated by Rotliegend, the soil here is characterised by red sandstone. Rich cherry fruit complemented by red berries gives the wine tremendous appeal, while sandstone minerality and spices such as liquorice and floral white pepper add depth. It all comes across as incredibly juicy, powerful and yet full of finesse and elegance. James Suckling particularly praised the concentration, structure, freshness and the flawless long finish and awarded it 96/100.
