Winery Geheimrat J. Wegeler Rüdesheim Berg Rottland Spätlese 2014
This wine comes from the treasure trove of the Geheimrat J. Wegeler winery. After ten years of ageing, this fruity-sweet Spätlese is slowly reaching its perfect drinking age. The Riesling comes from the Rüdesheimer Berg Rottland. The name goes back to a donation made by Archbishop Bardo of Mainz between 1031 and 1051 to the Rüdesheim winegrowers, who were allowed to clear (rotten) parts of the hill at the time. The hill, which is up to 30% steep, consists of weathered Taunus quartzite with a loess layer. The Riesling has a seductive aroma of lemon curd and candied lemon peel, stone fruit, flowers and a hint of sage. On the palate, the juicy fruit is combined with silky acidity and a deep minerality that makes the wine appear very fresh.
