Wine-growing region Barossa Valley
The Barossa Valley, 60 km northeast of Adelaide, is one of Australia's oldest wine regions and is known for diverse, high-quality wines. The region is famous for powerful Shiraz wines, but Grenache, Mourvèdre, Cabernet Sauvignon and Riesling are also grown.
Mediterranean climate and different soils promote complex wines. The wine-growing tradition dates back to the 1840s, when German immigrants planted the first vines.
Barossa wines are characterised by intensity, fruity flavours and well-structured tannins, especially Shiraz wines with aromas of dark fruits, chocolate and spices.
