Wine-growing region Coal & Derwent Valley (Tasmania)
The Coal & Derwent Valley wine region is located on Tasmania and is known for its cool climate and elegant wines, especially Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. High quality Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Gris wines are also grown here.
The maritime climatic conditions favour cool climate varieties, while sandy, loamy and clayey soils lend minerality and structure to the wines. Viticulture began in the 1970s and has developed steadily.
The wines are known for elegance, finesse and aromatic complexity, with Pinot Noir showing red fruits and spices, while Chardonnay scores on the fruity and mineral side.
