The history of the La Clotte vineyard began in 1886, but took a remarkable turn in 2015. In that year, it was acquired by the Vauthier family and thus by the owners of the legendary Château Ausone.
How do you turn an "underperformer" into an "overachiever"? By letting the team take over one of the best wine estates in Saint-Émilion. This is what happened at La Clotte, which was called "La Clotte de Grailly" from 1886 to 1949. The name "La Clotte" comes from the Gascony language and translates as "grotto" or cave and refers to the deep cellars that have been carved into the limestone there since Roman times.

In fact, the four hectares of vineyards are located on the limestone plateau of Saint-Émilion and offer the best conditions, which for a long time were not really brought into the bottle. But with the Vauthiers, this changed dramatically.
A new cellar is being built, new vines are being planted and the Merlot share of 80% is being significantly reduced in favour of Cabernet, which is due to climate change. The three hectares in use, with vines up to 55 years old, are once again worked by horses, as in the past, the grapes are harvested earlier and the wines are slimmer and more precise. A positive paradigm shift has taken place here.
