Nicolas Thienpont is one of the great visionaries in Bordeaux. His estates Pavie Macquin, Larcisse Ducasse and Beauséjour Duffau are famous.
In addition to the top wine estates in Saint-Émilion, he also gradually acquired some in the Francs Côtes de Bordeaux. One of these was Château Les Charmes Godard in 1988. From the 5.5 hectares of vineyards, exactly one wine is produced, namely a white Bordeaux, which is produced like a great white Bordeaux from the Graves. Thienpont and his consultant, the equally famous Stéphane Derenoncourt, use around 60 % Sémillon, 25 % Sauvignon Gris and 15 % Sauvignon Blanc, which are rooted in predominantly clayey and calcareous, sometimes clayey soils with a marl subsoil. Fermentation and six months of ageing take place in 500 litre tonneaux. The style is characterised by intensity and liveliness and offers far more than its price suggests.
