The wine estate, which was brought together at the beginning of the 19th century by the Irishman Bernard O'Phelan from the Clos de Garrmey and Château Ségur wine estates and popularised by his son Frank Phélan, is undoubtedly one of the five best Cru Bourgeois in Bordeaux.
The estate is a haven of stability and is one of the jewels of the Médoc and Saint-Estèphe in particular. For a long time, it was owned by the Gardinier brothers, owners of the Michelin restaurants Le Taillevent in Paris and London and Les Crayères in Champagne. After 30 years, they sold it a few years ago to the Belgian shipowner Philippe Van de Vyvere. But even though the ownership structure has changed, Véronique Dausse, her cellar master Fabrice Bacquey and her consultant Michel Rolland are still responsible for the estate and its wines. For years, they have ensured that the quality of the wines is exceptional for this price range, and the more Van de Vyvere invests in the vineyard and cellar, the better it gets.
The estate now covers around 65 hectares, most of which are planted in dense planting with around 10,000 vines per hectare. Most of the vines are over 50 years old and consist of 58% Cabernet Sauvignon, 39% Merlot, 1.5% Cabernet Franc and 1.5% Petit Verdot, the blend of which is aged in barrels from five different coopers. The 4.5 hectares around the castle are already organically farmed, and the other parts of the vineyard are to follow. In addition to the first wine (approx. 50% of production), there is the second wine „Frank Phélan“ and La Croix Bonis from young Merlot plantings.
