Château Smith Haut Lafitte
"The epitome of the Graves"
The Cathiard family
The Cathiard family
First mentioned in a document in the 14th century, Château Smith Haut Lafitte in the Pessac Leognan appellation, situated on the very best terroir, was acquired in the mid-19th century by the Scottish wine merchant Georges Smith, who gave the wine its current name. The name Lafitte (old French for hill) comes from the hilly terrain surrounding the château.
The current owners, the Cathiard family, acquired the cru classé vineyard in 1990 and modernised it over 30 years in a continuous process. They finally switched to organic farming around 5 years ago.
Today, both red and white wines are considered to be among the absolute top quality wines in Pessac Leognan. The remarkable château is home to a number of complex units. In addition to its own cooperage, where its own wooden barrels are produced, it also has a large medicinal herb garden and even runs a 5-star wellness hotel, Les Sources de Caudalie, nestled in the vineyards, with a large spa and a specially developed vinotherapy programme, albeit for external use only. The internal treatment can of course be carried out in the excellent hotel restaurant!
