Domaine J. de Villebois is a comparatively young but remarkably consistent winery, which within a few years has become one of the leading Sauvignon Blanc producers in the central Loire Valley. Since 2004, Joost and Miguela de Willebois have been developing their business step by step, always with the aim of precisely emphasising the stylistic depth of the great Loire origins. Today, their commitment includes vineyards in Sancerre, Pouilly-Fumé, Menetou-Salon and Touraine - regions whose geological diversity forms the foundation for the clear, mineral-driven style of the estate.
Villebois works in a parcel and terroir-orientated manner. The Sauvignon Blancs are vinified separately from the Terres Blanches (Kimmeridge limestone marl), Caillottes and Griottes (calcareous soils) and Silex (flint or flint clay soil), so that each site can retain its own nuances. This is precisely the strength of the winery: the wines never come across as loud or overdrawn, but instead show the cool clarity that makes Sauvignon Blanc from the Loire so special. Citrus fruit, light herbs, stony notes and a slightly smoky flavour from the Silex vineyards interweave to create a style that is immediately reminiscent of its origins. The acidity remains taut, but never aggressive, and the texture is always clean and calm. Sustainability is firmly anchored in the business; the domaine is certified according to the criteria of "Vignerons Engagés" and "Haut Valeur Environnementale" and deliberately keeps yields low. Vinification remains restrained, cool and precise, without the unnecessary use of wood, so as not to mask the origin. The result is a portfolio that ranges from lively, crystal-clear entry-level wines to complex, exciting terroir Sancerre.
