Tenuta Le Mortelle is located not far from Castiglione della Pescaia in the heart of the Maremma, the wild, ancient part of Tuscany. The Antinori family already owned land there in the middle of the 19th century and opened the winery in 1999.
For a long time, the Maremma was hardly recognised as a wine-growing region. This has changed fundamentally since the 1980s. The Antinori family, who popularised French grape varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Syrah in Tuscany, were partly responsible for this. In 1999, the Marchesi Antinori then decided to become involved in the Maremma themselves and founded Le Mortelle, a fattoria with 270 hectares of land, 175 of which are vineyards. Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc are mainly cultivated there, but also Vermentino, Ansonica and Viognier, as well as a small proportion of Carménère, which is rooted in medium-heavy, sandy and skeleton-rich soil.
As is now typical for Antinori, the winery was built on a hill so that all production steps can be carried out underground. This has many advantages. On the one hand, such a large winery can be integrated much better and, above all, inconspicuously into the landscape. In addition, the rock provides natural cooling and the wine can be processed gently because the processes are cascaded by gravity. The result is an unadulterated expression of the unmistakable terroir of the southern Maremma.
