The story of Mitolo is that of Frank Mitolo, who originally comes from a family of winegrowers in Abruzzo, but was himself the largest potato producer in the southern hemisphere. Until he decided to make wine in 1999. The roots of the Mitolo project go back generations to Abruzzo, where the family planted and cultivated vines. The family's move to Australia in the 1950s marked the beginning of a new start, as with so many Italian families who left the country for Australia after the Second World War.

Frank Mitolo's father was still a winegrower, Frank's father then switched to potatoes and Frank himself became the largest potato producer in the south. However, his grandfather and father were equally great wine lovers and Frank became one too.
in 1999, he had had enough of potatoes and decided to set up a winery. He had the right instincts when choosing his winemaker. He chose Ben Glaetzer, who was in his early 20s at the time and became one of Australia's best winemakers. Luke Mallaby has been responsible for the wines since 2021. He previously worked in the Barossa Valley, Yarra Valley, Rheinhessen, Santa Barbara and finally for Rosemount Estates in Mclaren Vale. Mitolo sources his fruit almost exclusively from McLaren Vale, which has some of the oldest soils on the continent. In the beginning, it was mainly wines from Shiraz, Mataro, Grenache and Cabernet Sauvignon that characterised his wines. Today it is also Nero d'Avola, Sagrantino, Montepulciano, Vermentino and Glera.
