None other than the enfant terrible of the Bordeaux wine scene, François Mitjavile, produces a great Côtes Bourg and also a Bordeaux AOP that originates outside the Bourg appellation, but is no less desirable.
After ten successful years at Tertre Rôtebœuf, François Mitjavile was tempted by another terroir and looked around the Côtes du Bourg appellation. He found what he was looking for in 1987, where he has been running the Roc de Cambes vineyard with his family ever since. The winery is located just 300 metres from the historic citadel of Bourg and the 12.5-hectare vineyard is characterised by pure limestone that reaches the surface.
Today, 85% Merlot and 15% Cabernet Sauvignon are grown on this excellent terroir. Part of the vineyard extends beyond the appellation boundary, so that in addition to the "Roc de Cambes", a "Domaine de Cambes Bordeaux AOP" is also produced, which is no less good. As with Tertre Rôtebœuf, this wine is harvested when ripe, hardly extracted and stored in Radoux barrels. It is dense, ripe, concentrated and muscular, yet enjoyable and fresh. An exceptional wine from this appellation.
