"The rebirth of a legend"

in 1904, Kaiser Wilhelm II had the Domäne Serrig estate built on the Saar. Located not far from France, it was to become a symbol of the greatness of Prussian viticulture. With the 2020 vintage, winemaking genius Markus Molitor has ushered in a new era for the domain.

It was the great era of German viticulture. Rieslings from the Moselle, Ruwer and Saar, Rheingau and Palatinate were served in the best hotels in the world and achieved prices that Burgundy, Bordeaux, Champagne & Co. could only dream of. At the time, wine was also a political issue in the constant competition between the two superpowers Germany (Prussia) and France, which is why Kaiser Wilhelm II had the Seerig state domain built on the Saar with a magnificent building and 25 hectares of steep slopes. Ten years later, the First World War began and the great era of German Riesling was over for the time being.

However, the extent to which the perception of German Riesling has changed since the 2000s can be seen not least in the success of winemaker Markus Molitor. The man has written an unrivalled success story with his dry and residual sweet wines - both at home and abroad. In this respect, he was exactly the right person to give the winery new splendour.

The spectacular steep slope of Seeriger Vogelsang extends from 220 metres to 340 metres and faces south-southwest. The winery was privatised at the end of the 1980s and taken over by Markus Molitor in 2016. Since then, he has renovated the vineyard piece by piece alongside his own new winery. Today, around 20,000 bottles are produced. But the two Rieslings, a dry and a Kabinett, are intended to be something exclusive. And the wines, which are vinified in the traditional way by pressing the Riesling as a whole bunch in a basket press, then fermenting spontaneously and ageing in Mosel barrels, are also sold exclusively at Place de Bordeaux. It is the first German winery to sell its wines exclusively via this marketplace. How fitting that the first vintage has already been honoured with 100 Parker points.
