We are sure that Giampaolo Motta can be described as a lucky man. Born in Naples, he has achieved something that few in the wine world manage to do in a lifetime of winemaking: To create one of the best wineries in Tuscany from nothing.
It was 1992 and Giampaolo Motta had already worked in various wineries in Tuscany, but was increasingly to be found in Bordeaux, where he had a great love for the wines. When he was given the opportunity that year to acquire the old La Massa vineyard in Panzano in Chianti with some outstanding sites, he jumped at the chance. However, it took another ten years and the advice of such famous oenologists as Carlo Ferrini and Stéphane Derenoncourt from Bordeaux before he finally found his direction and style.
He left the Consorzio Chianti Classico because he did not want to submit to their guidelines and, above all, their range of grape varieties and created his very own wine, which immediately made him famous. It was the "Giorgio Primo", which at the time consisted of Sangiovese, Sauvignon, Merlot, Petit Verdot and Alicante Bouschet and is now produced exclusively from Bordeaux grape varieties.
In Bordeaux, Motta also met the architect Bernard Mazières, who is responsible for the architecture of the modern cellars of wineries such as Château Petrus, Mouton-Rothschild and Château Latour, with whom he built the ideal cellar for him - simple, modern, functional and completely gravity-free. The three wines he produces today from around 27 hectares of vines - "La Massa", "Carla 6" and "Giorgio Primo" - are icons that are in demand worldwide.
