Weingüter Wegeler is a family business founded in 1882 and is one of the most important wineries in Germany. It has three wineries in two different growing regions and also owns the well-known „Geheimrat J“ brand.
The company is run by the fourth generation of the Wegeler family together with Ralf Frenzel (Tre Torri Verlag, Fine) as spokesman for the owner families and managing director Richard Grosche. There is a winery on the Moselle in Bernkastel and one in Oestrich-Winkel in the Rheingau, both of which specialise in Riesling. In 2014, the Krone Assmannshausen winery was acquired in its entirety, meaning that Pinot Noir now also plays a role in the company.
Geheimrat J., actually Julius Wegeler, was initially a wine merchant and sparkling wine producer at Deinhard before establishing himself as a winemaker. He had enough capital to realise his vision of perfect Rieslings, which he wanted to age on the lees for at least two winters. The history of Weingut Geheimrat Julius Wegeler began with the purchase of the vineyard estate of Baron Watzel von Karben and his vineyards from Rüdesheim to Oestrich-Winkel. In 1884, the winery in Oestrich-Winkel was added, which is now the headquarters of the House of Wegeler.
On the Moselle, the winery has 3.22 hectares in the heart of the Berncasteler Doktor, which is characterised by Devonian weathered slate, blue slate and grey slate. In 1900, Julius Wegeler paid 100 gold marks per vine for the purchase - an unprecedented sum. In the Rheingau, Wegeler was able to acquire parts of the Rüdesheim Schlossberg, which today covers 27.46 hectares and is characterised by Taunus quartzite and phyllite slate.
