Weinlaubenhof Kracher is located in Illmitz on Lake Neusiedl. Here, the Kracher family has made the family winery world-famous with a large selection of legendary sweet wines.
The conditions for producing great sweet wines are ideal in the so-called Seewinkel on Lake Neusiedl. The lake is a very shallow steppe lake with a large evaporation surface.
The evening mists and the warm Pannonian climate create warm and humid weather changes, so that Botrytis cinerea can develop, which perforates the berry skins so that the berries lose water but accumulate sugar. Welschriesling, Chardonnay, Traminer, Scheurebe, Muskat-Ottonel and occasionally Zweigelt are used to produce Trockenbeerenauslese, Beerenauslese, Auslese and sometimes even ice wines.
Although Alois I. Kracher laid the foundation for the world reputation, the breakthrough came with Alois II. who, at the age of 22, had already studied chemistry and perfected the production of sweet wines with a scientific approach by finding the balance between sweetness, fruit and acidity. his breakthrough to global success came in 1991. He was an ambassador for his wines and his country, but died at the age of 48. Fortunately, his son Gerhard, who has been running the winery since 2007, is just as talented and passionate about expanding the fan base of the „Kracher“.
