Château Certan de May in Pomerol owes its existence to a royal decree from the 16th century. This involved a gift from the king to the Scottish de May family, who had settled in France. Viticulture began in the 18th century. in 1925, the estate passed to the Barreau family.
Today it is managed by Jean-Luc Barreau.
Certan de May is located on the central plateau of Pomerol, surrounded by Vieux Château Certan and La Fleur-Pétrus. The 5.5 hectares of vineyards are characterised by a combination of clay and gravel. Merlot (70 %), Cabernet Franc (25 %) and Cabernet Sauvignon (5 %) are planted here.
Since the 2013 vintage, Barreau has been working together with the renowned Merlot specialist Jean-Claude Berrouet, who also advises Château Petrus.
