Buy wines from Château Duhart-Milon
Château Duhart-Milon is located near Paulliac on the Médoc peninsula, in the immediate vicinity of the world-famous Château Latife. Lafite second wine was produced on the Duhart plots around 200 years ago. The high quality of this area was recognised early on, with the 1855 classification giving the terroir the status of "4th high vineyard" - the only one in Paulliac.
For around 100 years, conditions were largely stable, and with around 50 hectares, the vineyard was one of the largest in the region. From the late 1930s onwards, the business passed through many hands due to inheritance and sales. The quality suffered. The great frost of 1956 made the situation even worse.
in 1962, the Rothschilds acquired the château as "neighbours", rebuilt it, restructured the land, integrated additional plots, replanted them and created cellars in Paulliac. By 2001, the vineyard area had expanded from 17 hectares (1962) to 71 hectares. The vines have long since reached a respectable age and Duhart-Milon once again stands for consistently outstanding quality.
The vineyard is located to the west of Château Lafite, on the hill of Milon, which runs alongside the Carruades plateau. Cabernet Sauvignon (67%) and Merlot (33%) grow on fine gravel and sand as well as limestone subsoil. The average age of the vines is 30 years. Both châteaux have been run by the same team since 1962, so all the experience and radically high standards of Château Lafite Rothschild are also reflected in Duhart-Milon.
