The name of the Château La Fleur-Pétrus is no coincidence. The wine estate, which has become one of the best wine estates in Pomerol over the last ten years, is located exactly between Pétrus and Lafleur.
The roots of the Lafleur-Pétrus vineyard date back to the 18th century. At that time, it comprised parcels of the Lafleur vineyard and a vineyard called Pétrus. Although it never became very well known, Jean-Pierre Moueix, who had been based in Libourne since 1937, became aware of the small vineyard and acquired it in 1950 as the first of his wine estates, even before Château Trotanoy. Initially, it did not achieve the class that Moueix wanted. It took half a century and many changes had to be made to the vineyard. Some parts were sold, others, such as the property of the former Château Guillot and the Providence vineyard, were acquired, and the very flat plots on the plateau were drained. The château's wines have now been among the best in the region for around ten years.
The plots on the 18.7 hectares are predominantly characterised by gravelly soils, which produce a great elegance in the wines, as well as clayey soils, which tend to provide a silky texture, density and structure. The Grand Vin of the Château La Fleur-Pétrus consists of around 90 % Merlot, plus 6 % Cabernet Franc and 4 % Petit Verdot. The Cabernet Franc provides structure, elegance and complexity, while the Petit Verdot adds flavour.
