The Cuvelier family
Château Poujeaux is located in Moulis-en-Médoc and thus belongs to the smallest of the six local appellations on the Gironde peninsula. At one time, the area was split into three parts.
in 1956, the vineyard was restored to its historical form and now covers 100 hectares, 70 of which are vineyards.
The Cuvelier family, who also own Clos Fourtet, Premier Grand Cru Classé in Saint-Émilion, have owned the estate since 2008.
Today, Matthieu Cuvelier and Christophe Labenne run the business. They are oenologically advised by Stéphane Derenoncourt.
The vines of Château Poujeaux are planted on a continuous gravel bank in the north-east of Moulis. The high planting density of 10,000 vines per hectare is remarkable. The grape variety is typical of the Médoc: Cabernet Sauvignon (50 %) and Merlot (40 %) dominate, with Petit Verdot (5 %) and Cabernet Franc (5 %) also planted. "The roundness and charm of Merlot are balanced by the tension and energy of Cabernet Sauvignon. The Petit Verdot brings a powerful structure and rich flavour. Finally, the Cabernet Franc provides additional complexity."
The harvest usually begins in mid-September and is of course carried out by hand. During vinification, batches are treated separately according to vine age, location and grape variety. Alcoholic and malolactic fermentation takes one month, maturation in barriques (30 % new wood) lasts 12 months, then the assemblage takes place.
