Winery Dr. Loosen
"Great wines only come from clear ideas of the winemakers."

Like few others, the name Dr. Loosen stands for Mosel Rieslings of international standard. The winery in Bernkastel has been family-owned for 200 years, and has been managed by Ernst F. Loosen since 1988.
In addition to experience, knowledge and passion, the winery has another priceless resource: vines that are true to their roots, some of them over 100 years old, in historic top sites such as Wehlener Sonnenuhr, Ürziger Würzgarten, Erdener Treppchen or Graacher Himmelreich. The stony soils have spared these plants from phylloxera.
Uncompromising quality and authentic terroir expression are Loosen's vanishing points: "When I drink a wine from our Große Lage Wehlener Sonnenuhr, I want to smell the blue slate that nourished the grapes and taste the fruit associated with this unique terroir. I want to experience the special character of a vintage. That's what makes wine special from any other drink."
The terroir in the Middle Moselle is characterised by slate soils that reflect sunlight during the day and store heat at night. In addition, the rock provides the minerality typical of the Moselle. The southern exposure of the steep slopes guarantees long sunshine and a correspondingly long vegetation period with slow and intensive grape ripening.
Since the 2008 vintage, all dry wines have been fermented spontaneously in wooden barrels and aged for up to 24 months on the full lees. The wines that have been aged longer are only brought to market after two to three years of bottle ageing.
