Karl-Heinz & Franz Wehrheim

Since 1920 and now in its fourth generation, traditional grape varieties of the region have been cultivated and vinified at a high level at the Palatinate winery Dr. Wehrheim. Karl-Heinz Wehrheim and son Franz run today's winery and combine decades of experience with a contemporary drive for innovation in the team.

„Offering harmony and balance without being sweet. Embodying fullness without appearing 'fat'. Tasting piquant, mineral and independent without relying on a superficial fruit.“

This is how the two describe the basic style of their wines.

The Dr. Wehrheim winery counts itself among the so-called "terroirists". in 1999, Karl-Heinz was one of the first in Germany to start making his wines "terroir pure". In the individual vineyards in Birkweiler, about 30 kilometres northeast of Karlsruhe, the vines stand on red sandstone weathered soil, shell limestone, Rotliegend and Keuper soil. The best-known sites are the Kastanienbusch, the Mandelberg and the Kastanienbusch Köppel. The main grapes grown are Riesling, white Burgundy and Pinot Noir.

To ensure the highest quality grapes, the Wehrheims have relied on biodynamic cultivation since 2007. Since the 2010 vintage, all varieties have been fully certified organic. According to the winemakers, the soil typicity of the wines can be tasted even better and more precisely since the conversion to biodynamic cultivation.

In the wine cellar, the focus is on both tradition and modern technology. After gentle fermentation, the wine is matured in steel tanks or wooden barrels. A few years ago, new standards were set in the winery with a temperature- and humidity-regulating barrique cellar especially for Pinot Noir.
