The Rheingau winery Georg Breuer has existed since 1880 and has been owned by the family since the beginning of the 20th century. Theresa Breuer (Falstaff Winemaker of the Year 2016) is now the fourth generation of the family to run the estate. Together with operations manager Hermann Schmoranz and cellar master Markus Lundén, she is consistently continuing the tradition of high-quality Rieslings and even developing it further.
The Breuers expanded quickly after the takeover. There were successive expansions. Under Heinrich and Bernhard Breuer, the estate grew to 34 hectares in the best vineyards in Rüdesheim and Rauenthal. Today, the estate cultivates 40 hectares, 65% of which are steep slopes. The top sites in Rüdesheim are Berg Schlossberg, Berg Rottland and Berg Roseneck. In Rauenthal it is the Nonnenberg monopole vineyard and in Lorch the Pfaffenwies.
The winery gained international renown as early as the 1980s. Today, Theresa consciously focuses on her work in the vineyard and has consistently switched to a near-natural method of cultivation, including the renunciation of herbicides, pesticides and synthetic fertilisers.
For powerful, elegant wines that can be stored, "we make sure that the grapes are as ripe as possible and select the grapes during the harvest. Healthy berries are indispensable for taste and fruit. It follows that fruit aromas, balance and body in the wine are more important than prescribed must weights, and inner density more significant than harvest quantity." The Georg Breuer winery is one of the first members of the FAIR and GREEN association, which specifically promotes sustainable viticulture.
