Buy wines from Kellerei Terlan
In the Etsch Valley, which was characterised by large estates at the time, the founding of a cooperative was simply "revolutionary". in 1893, 24 winegrowers joined forces. Today the Terlan Winery has 140 members. On a cultivated area of about 190 ha, 30% red and 70% white wines thrive.
The soil is dominated by volcanic quartz porphyry. The vine produces polyphenols here, which give rise to particularly salty wines with tension and depth as well as great longevity.
The climate also favours viticulture. In the central Adige Valley, for example, on whose steep south to south-west slopes the Terlan terroir is located, a sub-Mediterranean climate prevails. Even prickly pears grow here. The average annual temperature is above average for this latitude. In summer, the sun heats up strongly during the day, while at night the temperature is determined by cool downdrafts. The special nature of the area is also reflected in the designation of origin (DOC), which includes the addition of "Terlaner" next to "Südtirol".
The vineyards of the winegrowers' cooperative are situated between 250 and 900 metres above sea level. Lower sites are suitable for Lagrein, Cabernet or other heavy red wines. Pinot Noir or white wines prefer the higher, somewhat cooler sites. The Terlan Winery markets its wines in different quality lines, for example Selection and Tradition. In addition, a rarity wine is brought to market every year, which has at least ten years of maturation on the fine lees behind it.
