Le Macchiole Winery

"Symbol of an entire region."

Luca D`Attoma

More than 40 years ago, Eugenio Campolmi and Cinzia Merli acquired land along the Via Bolgherese in Bolgheri and planted four hectares of vines. the first Paleo Rosso was bottled in 1983. in 1991, winemaker Luca D'Attoma joined them. Together they wanted to create great wines.
Since then, knowledge, wine experience, vineyards and reputation have grown continuously. The wines achieve top ratings and have played a decisive role in shaping the region's reputation. in 2009, Le Macchiole was named the best winery in Italy by the AIS (Association of Italian Sommeliers). The winery is now run by Cinzia Merli, who is supported by her team and sons Elia and Mattia.

At the beginning of the 1980s, Bolgheri was still a blank spot on the Tuscan wine map, far removed from the already established appellations. The area is characterised by slightly lower temperatures and the sea breeze ensures good ventilation. 27 identified soil types allow for a wide range of varieties. Typical varieties are Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Syrah as well as Chardonnay, Sauvignon, Viognier and Vermentino.

"Most of the soils ... are loamy, sandy, alkaline soils with remarkable depth and a very fine, yet substantial mineral framework. These are all perfect conditions for producing elegant wines with long ageing potential."

The Le Macchiole vineyards cover 86 hectares in different areas. "The different small plots with unique characteristics give the wines different nuances." Each part of this mosaic is treated and harvested individually. The winery has been working organically since 2001 and biodynamically since 2009.
