Maximin Grünhaus Winery

"Home of the singularity."

Maximin von Schubert

The Maximin Grünhaus vineyard is located near Trier, at the confluence of the Ruwer and Moselle rivers. Wine has been grown here since the Romans. For several generations now, the estate has been in the hands of the von Schubert family. Today, Maximin von Schubert is at the helm.

The estate has a total of 34 hectares of contiguous vineyards, spread over the three monopoly sites of Abtsberg, Herrenberg and Bruderberg, which are characterised by bluish and reddish Devonian slate. Monopoly site" means that these areas are cultivated exclusively by the winery itself and that the specific terroir expression is therefore explicitly linked to the name Maximin Grünhaus. Traditionally, almost exclusively Riesling is produced. The conversion to a more elaborate, organically oriented production took place many years ago.

No less attention is paid to vinification. It only takes a few minutes for the harvested grapes to reach the cellar. After gentle pressing and natural clarification, the musts are brought to fermentation temperature here. The fermentation itself takes place spontaneously - i.e. with the natural yeasts from the vineyard and cellar - in deliberately small stainless steel tanks or in 1,000-litre oak barrels. The small containers are used above all to bring out the variance of the individual wines. The oak barrel, which is made of specially produced oak with particularly narrow pores, allows only minimal oxidation. It is mainly used for ageing and storing the premium qualities.
