"I rely on my gut feeling."

Pichler family

The Pichler family has been growing grapes in Wösendorf in the Wachau region since 1731. in 1997 Rudi Pichler (III) took over the helm of the family business, expanded the vineyards and built a new cellar in 2004, the design of which presents itself "as a bridge between old building culture and functional commercial architecture".

Currently, 15 ha of vineyards are cultivated. Of this, 65% is Grüner Veltliner, 30% Riesling and 5% Pinot Blanc and other varieties, which are vinified in the Vinea Wachau quality categories Steinfeder, Federspiel and Smaragd. The motivation for Rudi Pichler and the next generation is to recognise the peculiarities of the different sites, then to bring them out and preserve them.

Shaped by the Danube and formed by elaborately constructed stone terraces, the renowned wine-growing area was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2000. Here the Pichlers have plots in the Kollmütz, Kirchweg, Hochrain, Hochrein-Relais and Achleithen sites. The very diverse soils consist mainly of gneiss of various degrees of weathering as well as loess and sedimentary deposits.
