Tenuta di Trinoro Winery
"Wine is a work of art that changes with each year."
Andrea Franchetti
Andrea Franchetti
Busy winemaker and entrepreneur Andrea Franchetti owns three wineries, one in Sicily and two in Tuscany. The area of what is now Tenuta di Trinoro in the Orcia Valley near Sarteano, in the remote southwest of the region, was acquired in the 1980s and the winery was created from scratch. Franchetti recognised similarities to Saint-Émilion in the soil structure. Thus, only Bordeaux varieties were planted: Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot - with a clear emphasis on the former.
The vineyards cover 24 hectares at an altitude of up to 600 metres above sea level. Here, eroded mountain rock meets the clay of the primeval seabed. The emphatically opulent wine style with its aromatic concentration results from the low yield, which is deliberately brought about by close planting and heavy thinning.
"Tenuta di Trinoro" - a cuvée mainly of Cabernet Franc and Merlot, with some Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot - is the flagship of the winery and is only produced in very small quantities. In addition, there are also single-varietal wines, partly from single vineyards.
