Paul Hobbs is undoubtedly one of the winemaking personalities who first brought Californian viticulture to its current, internationally recognised level. And Hobbs was and is similarly influential for viticulture in Argentina.
When production in the Andean country was still primarily for the domestic market, the American recognised a previously unseen potential and created Viña Cobos, a beacon that shines far beyond the Atlantic.
in 1999, Hobbs teamed up with the Argentinian oenologist couple Andrea Marchiori and Luis Barraud and founded Viña Cobos in Mendoza. The three of them focussed primarily on Malbec from outstanding single vineyards and produced dizzying qualities. They also produce Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Chardonnay.
Hobbs is now the sole owner and one should assume that nothing is left to chance with him. One expression for this is "precision viticulture". Every plot of land is studied in depth, observed, measured with new technologies and analysed in order to make precise decisions. Other hallmarks: No herbicides, harvesting by hand and in the cool of the night, manual selection of the berries before fermentation.
With the Chañares Estate, the Zingaretti Estate and the Marchiori Vineyard, Viña Cobos has a wide variety of terroirs. The sandy-loamy or very rocky soils produce elegant or powerful wines.
in 2022, the 2019 Malbec was awarded 100 points by James Suckling for the third time in less than ten years.
