Santiago de Chile in the 1930s and 40s: Alfonso Chadwick Errázuriz loves polo and wine. The first passion made him captain of the national team. The second made him first a wine merchant, then a winemaker and generally the motor of the Chilean wine industry.
in 1942, he bought an estate and vineyards in the Alto Maipo Valley. He also built a polo field there. Since 1992, the vines that son Eduardo planted for a wine in honour of his father have been growing there.
Eduardo Chadwick stands for Cabernet Sauvignon at the highest level - which almost sounds like a pun, given the location at the foot of the Andes. The terroir is considered one of the best in Chile.
The 15 ha vineyard is situated 650 metres above sea level on the northern bank of the Maipo River. The soils are moderately fertile, with around 40 cm of clay and loam over a stony alluvial layer from the nearby river.
The Mediterranean climate brings a long dry season, with rainfall concentrated in winter. High temperature fluctuations during the day and night are one of the main factors for the intense colour of the wines. Above all, they ensure a ripeness that brings out intense fruit without losing acidity.
Each plot is treated and harvested individually. Ducking is done in the cool morning hours to preserve the fruit quality. The batches are carefully pressed and then fermented separately between 28 °C and 31 °C. This is followed by a maceration of up to 30 days. The wine is then aged in French oak barrels in underground cellars. For maximum control, the cuvémentation to the final wine takes place just before bottling.
