Pinot Gris grape variety

Pinot Gris, also known as Pinot Grigio, is a white grape variety that is cultivated in many wine regions such as France, Italy and Germany. The wines vary depending on the growing region and style. Italian Pinot Grigios are often light, fresh and citrusy, while Alsatian Pinot Gris and German Pinot Gris tend to be full-bodied, rich and fruity. Typical flavours are green apple, pear, citrus and stone fruit, accompanied by nutty and mineral notes.

The wines can be dry, semi-dry or sweet and can be matured in both steel tanks and wooden barrels. Pinot Gris is ideal as an aperitif or as an accompaniment to a variety of dishes, from fish and seafood to poultry, mushrooms and creamy sauces. The wines should generally be drunk young to enjoy their freshness, but high-quality examples can also have a certain ageing potential.

Frequently asked questions (FAQ) about Pinot Gris wine

What characterises the Pinot Gris grape variety?

Pinot Gris (Pinot Grigio) is an elegant, versatile white wine variety with a full body and lively acidity. Typical flavours: green apple, pear, citrus and stone fruit, complemented by nutty and mineral notes. Stylistically, it ranges from light and fresh (e.g. Italian) to full-bodied and complex (e.g. German or Alsatian styles). Thanks to its fruity balance, it makes a wonderful aperitif or accompaniment to food.

Where is Pinot Gris mainly grown?

In Germany, Pinot Gris is one of the most popular white wines and is mainly grown in Baden, the Palatinate and Rheinhessen. The grape variety is also widespread in Italy (Pinot Grigio), France (Alsace, Pinot Gris) and Austria.

What are the main flavours of Pinot Gris?

Typical flavours are pear, apple, citrus fruits, nuts and sometimes a hint of honey or flowers. Depending on the ageing process, the wine can be fresh and fruity or creamy and full-bodied.

How does Pinot Gris differ from other white wine varieties?

Pinot Gris has less acidity than Riesling and has a softer and rounder flavour. Compared to Chardonnay, it is often fresher, with clear fruit instead of buttery, woody notes.

How should Pinot Gris be served?

It is best served slightly chilled at 8-10 °C. This allows its fine fruit flavours to unfold optimally. A bulbous white wine glass emphasises the complexity of the wine.

What dishes does Pinot Gris harmonise particularly well with?

Pinot Gris is a versatile accompaniment to food. It is an excellent accompaniment to fish, poultry, light pasta dishes, fresh salads, mild cheeses and Mediterranean starters.

How long can you keep a bottle of Pinot Gris after opening?

Once opened, a bottle should be kept tightly closed in the fridge. The wine will usually stay fresh and aromatic for 2-3 days.

What ageing potential does Pinot Gris have?

Most Pinot Gris wines are intended to be enjoyed fresh within 1-3 years. However, high-quality single-vineyard wines can also mature for 5-7 years and develop an exciting, nutty flavour.

What are the health benefits of Pinot Gris?

Enjoyed in moderation, Pinot Gris - like other wines - can contain antioxidant substances that can prevent cardiovascular diseases. It remains important: Consumption should be moderate.

What is the price range for Pinot Gris wines?

Entry-level wines are available from just €5-7. Good quality wines from German wine-growing regions are usually between €8 and €15. Top vineyards and special vintages can cost €20 and more.
