Riesling grape variety

Riesling is one of the best-known white grape varieties and is cultivated all over the world - first and foremost in Germany, of course. It is more flexible and versatile than almost any other grape. The range of possibilities for vinifying Riesling extends from bone-dry to clearly residual or even noble sweet, from fruity, fresh lightness to an oily, dense elixir. It can also provide a good basis for sparkling wine production. Riesling always displays an unmistakably fine interplay of fruit and acidity, ideally complemented by the more or less pronounced mineral notes that its terroir has given it. Typical Riesling fruit is yellow stone fruit, namely apricot and peach - but the spectrum ranges from citric notes to apple and pear to the legendary petrol or slate tones. Riesling wines cut a fine figure when young, but high-quality examples can be savoured over several decades. Its range of applications in food pairing is similarly broad.

How does German Riesling differ from others?

Germany is considered the country of origin of Riesling. No other country offers so many fine gradations from bone dry to noble sweet. While Riesling from Australia or the USA is often more powerful and fruit-driven, German Rieslings are characterised by their elegant balance of freshness, acidity and minerality.

How long can you store a Riesling wine?

- Dry Rieslings: 3-7 years, top wines also significantly longer.

- Noble sweet Rieslings (Auslese, Beerenauslese, Trockenbeerenauslese): Can be kept for decades and often become even more exciting with age.
👉 Note: Our premium Rieslings are real collector's items - also ideal as gifts

What makes a good vintage for Riesling?

A good vintage depends on the climatic conditions: plenty of sunshine, cool nights and sufficient rain ensure ripe, flavoursome grapes. Particularly famous vintages are characterised by a perfect balance of sugar and acidity.

How is Riesling wine made?

The production process follows classic steps:

1. Harvesting the fully ripe Riesling grapes.
2. Gentle pressing to extract the must.
3. Fermentation in stainless steel tanks or wooden barrels.
4. Maturation and ageing until bottling.
This gentle processing preserves the characteristic freshness and flavour.

Which regions produce the best Riesling wines?

- Germany: Mosel, Rheingau, Pfalz, Nahe.

- France: Alsace.
- Austria: Wachau, Kremstal, Kamptal.
- International: Australia (Clare Valley), USA (Finger Lakes, Washington State).

What does it mean when a Riesling is labelled "dry"?

"Dry" means that the wine contains very little residual sugar (max. 9 g/L). The result: fresh, clear and with emphasised acidity - an ideal accompaniment to light dishes.

How should Riesling wine be served?

- Serving temperature: 8-10 °C.

- Glasses: Best served in slender white wine glasses that concentrate the flavours.
- Storage: Store in a cool, dark and horizontal place.
👉 Tip: Our stylish white wine glasses will show off your Riesling to its best advantage

What are the health benefits of Riesling wine?

When enjoyed in moderation, Riesling wine can have positive effects:

- Antioxidants from the grapes support the heart and circulation.
- Moderate amounts can reduce stress and aid digestion.
- However, alcohol should always be consumed responsibly
