Sauvignon Blanc grape variety

Sauvignon Blanc is one of the best-known white grape varieties in France. It actually originated in the Loire - but is now cultivated worldwide as the second most important noble variety after Chardonnay. New Zealand in particular has become the second home of Sauvignon Blanc. The variety is known for its citric tones and distinctly intense flavour. Depending on how it is vinified, it can have an aroma dominated by grassy freshness or a heavier bouquet with intense flavours of gooseberries or tropical fruits such as passion fruit. Green peppers and grapefruit are also not uncommon. Sauvignon Blanc can also be matured in steel tanks with the exclusion of oxygen as far as possible or in wooden containers with a much more oxidative flavour. Depending on the style of vinification, the ageing horizon can range from a few years to two decades.

Frequently asked questions (FAQ) about Sauvignon Blanc wine

What is the flavour of Sauvignon Blanc?

Sauvignon Blanc is known for its fresh acidity and aromatic bouquet. Typical flavours range from green peppers, gooseberries and citrus fruits to tropical fruits such as passion fruit. Mineral or herbaceous notes are often added - a wine full of vibrancy.

What are the best foods to pair with Sauvignon Blanc?

Sauvignon Blanc is a versatile food companion. It goes particularly well with:

- Fish and seafood
- Goat's cheese (classic: Crottin de Chavignol)
- Asparagus dishes
- Light Mediterranean cuisine with vegetables, fresh herbs and olive oil
- Asian dishes with lemongrass or coriander
👉 Try it with a summer salad or grilled fish - perfect!

Which regions are known for producing high-quality Sauvignon Blanc?

- Loire Valley (France): Classics such as Sancerre or Pouilly-Fumé.

- New Zealand (Marlborough): Intensely fruity, exotic flavours.
- Chile & South Africa: Fresh, clear style with a mineral character.
- Germany & Austria: Elegant, delicately fruity varieties

How should Sauvignon Blanc be served?

Sauvignon Blanc is best served chilled at 8-10 °C. A slender white wine glass brings out the intense flavours perfectly.

How long should Sauvignon Blanc be stored?

Sauvignon Blanc is generally a wine that should be drunk young - usually within 2-3 years. However, high-quality single-vineyard wines (e.g. from the Loire Valley) can mature for 5-7 years and develop additional depth.

How does Sauvignon Blanc differ from other white wine varieties?

Compared to Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc is lighter, fresher and more aromatic. While Riesling often impresses with a striking balance of sweetness and acidity, Sauvignon Blanc delights with grassy, fruity and tangy notes.

What is the average price of a good Sauvignon Blanc?

- Everyday wines: from approx. 6-9 €

- Premium wines from renowned regions: between €12-25
- Top wines (e.g. Sancerre, Pouilly-Fumé): from €30 upwards
👉 In our shop, you will find Sauvignon Blanc in every price range - from uncomplicated terrace wines to fine classics

Are there non-alcoholic alternatives to Sauvignon Blanc?

Yes - there are now high-quality non-alcoholic Sauvignon Blancs that have the typical fresh flavour but do not contain alcohol. Perfect for conscious enjoyment.

How does the terroir influence the flavour of Sauvignon Blanc?

The terroir - i.e. soil, climate and location - has a decisive influence on Sauvignon Blanc:

- Limestone and chalk soils: mineral, elegant.
- Warm regions: tropical fruit flavours.
- Cool regions: fresh, grassy flavours with lively acidity

What are the health benefits of Sauvignon Blanc?

When enjoyed in moderation, Sauvignon Blanc can, like other white wines:

- Support the cardiovascular system (through antioxidants and polyphenols).
- Reduce stress and increase well-being.
- Enjoy low in calories: a glass usually contains only 80-100 kcal.
(Note: health benefits only apply if consumed in moderation)
