Pinot Blanc grape variety

The Pinot Blanc grape - called Pinot Blanc in France and Pinot Bianco in Italy - is the lightest-coloured member of the large Burgundy family. The variety produces fresh, fruity wines whose acidity can vary from moderate to strong depending on how they are made and which develop delicate fruit flavours such as apples, pears or citrus fruits, often complemented by nutty notes such as almonds. The Pinot Blanc grape thrives best in cooler climates and on chalky soils and can - provided it is vinified carefully - exhibit a fine minerality. The wines from this grape variety are mostly dry, but there are also semi-dry and sweet varieties. It is particularly suitable as an accompaniment to light dishes such as salads, fish and white meat, but is also often used in cuvees, especially in sparkling wine production.

Frequently asked questions (FAQ) about Pinot Blanc wine

What characterises the Pinot Blanc grape variety?

Pinot Blanc/Pinot Bianco is the lightest-coloured member of the Burgundy family. The wines are fresh, fruity and show flavours of apple, pear and citrus, often complemented by fine nutty notes. Depending on the ageing process, the acidity ranges from moderate to strong, sometimes accompanied by mineral finesse. Pinot Blanc is ideal with light dishes such as fish, salads or white meat and is also often used in cuvées and sparkling wines.

What is Pinot Blanc?

Pinot Blanc - also known internationally as Weißburgunder - is a noble white wine variety from the Burgundy family. It is considered the elegant sister of Pinot Gris and is characterised by finesse, fine acidity and versatility. It is one of the most popular white wine varieties in Germany and is a real all-rounder for everyday and special occasions.

What does Pinot Blanc taste like?

Pinot Blanc stands for fresh, clear and restrained enjoyment. Typical flavours:

- Flavours of green apples, pears, citrus fruits and sometimes nuts
- Light to medium-bodied structure with fine acidity
- Elegant, unobtrusive freshness
In the glass, it is usually dry, light and balanced, perfect for connoisseurs who prefer wines that are not too strong

Are there different types of Pinot Blanc?

Yes - a distinction is made depending on the ageing process:

- Fresh, light Pinot Blanc in stainless steel tanks (young, fruity, uncomplicated)
- Pinot Blanc aged in wooden barrels (stronger, creamier, more complex)
- Site wines & reserve wines (with plenty of depth and ageing potential)
Every wine lover will find the right style - from summer wines to festive menu accompaniments

Which dishes go well with Pinot Blanc?

Pinot Blanc is a real food companion. It goes particularly well with:

- Fish and seafood
- Poultry and veal
- Asparagus and fresh vegetables
- Pasta with light-coloured sauces
- Light summer salads
- Mild cheese
Tip: A cool Pinot Blanc also rounds off a festive menu in style.

How should Pinot Blanc be stored?

Pinot Blanc is usually intended for immediate consumption, but also develops beautifully in the first 2-4 years after bottling. The following applies to storage:

- Store in a cool, dark place (10-15 °C)
- If possible, store horizontally so that the cork remains moist
- Avoid strong temperature fluctuations
Particularly high-quality Pinot Blanc from top vineyards can also mature for 5-8 years

What is the difference between Pinot Blanc and Chardonnay?

Both grape varieties are closely related, but differ significantly in character:

- Pinot Blanc: Light, fresh, mineral, with delicate fruit flavours.
- Chardonnay: Stronger, more opulent, often with notes of butter, vanilla or wood barrel ageing.
In short: Pinot Blanc stands for elegant restraint, while Chardonnay is known for fullness and power

Where is Pinot Blanc mainly grown?

The grape variety is found in many wine regions. The main growing areas are:

- Germany: Palatinate, Rheinhessen, Baden, Franconia
- France: Alsace, Loire
- Italy: South Tyrol, Friuli
- Austria: Burgenland, Styria
Germany is one of the largest producers in the world today

Which wineries produce the best Pinot Blanc?

Particularly well-known names in Germany are, for example:

- Weingut Dr Heger (Baden)
- Knipser Winery (Palatinate)
- Wittmann Winery (Rheinhessen)
- Rebholz Winery (Palatinate)
- Aldinger Winery (Württemberg)
But many smaller family wineries also produce excellent value-for-money wines

How much does a bottle of Pinot Blanc cost on average?

- Everyday wines: from approx. 6-10 €

- Quality wines from renowned estates: approx. 12-20 €
- Top vineyards & site wines: € 25-40 and more
Pinot Blanc therefore offers a wide range from cheap to premium

How should Pinot Blanc be served?

For perfect enjoyment:

- Drinking temperature: 8-10 °C
- Glass: classic white wine glass, not too large to emphasise the fine freshness
- Tip: Allow to breathe briefly before serving, do not decant for a long time
