Wittmann Winery
"Winemaking is always a generational contract." The Wittmanns and their ancestors have been making wine in Westhofen, Rheinhessen, for around 350 years and 15 generations. The winery has been certified organic since 1990.
The 2011 "Morstein" from Philipp Wittmann is still a Großes Gewächs in the classic style. It is a wonderful, dense, silky and voluminous wine where everything has its place. Tasted blind, one would perhaps place it more in the Palatinate, were it not for the clear, vibrant, energetic acidity from the Westhofen limestone. It rears up in the full fruit, combines with a distinctive tannin and a fine, subtle spiciness and glides into a long, juicy finish. Enjoyed straight from the magnum, this is a spectacular wine that was rated with up to 95 points (JAMES SUCKLING) at the time, which was clearly reserved.
