Wittmann Winery
"Winemaking is always a generational contract." The Wittmanns and their ancestors have been making wine in Westhofen, Rheinhessen, for around 350 years and 15 generations. The winery has been certified organic since 1990.
The "Große Gewächs" from the Westhofener Brunnenhäuschen offers a great deal of tension, which is typical of the site, which is fully south-facing but high up. The late-ripening Riesling is rooted in clay marl, terra rossa and limestone rock. The wine opens with a subtle floral fragrance before exotic notes, stone fruit and lime take over. On the palate, the Riesling offers a juicy abundance of fruit, which is tinged with salinity, tart notes of zest and minerality. JAMES SUCKLING awarded it 97 points, JANCIS ROBINSON 18.5/20.
