Wittmann Winery
"Winemaking is always a generational contract." The Wittmanns and their ancestors have been making wine in Westhofen, Rheinhessen, for around 350 years and 15 generations. The winery has been certified organic since 1990.
A whopping 95 points for a local wine is not an everyday occurrence. And yet every single point that James Suckling gave to the 2022 vintage of the "Westhofener Riesling Erste Lagen' from the Wittmann winery is well deserved. No wonder, as this cuvée is a blend from the top vineyards in Westhofen. Around 80 per cent of the wine comes from the Morstein vineyard, plus a proportion from the Brunnenhäuschen and Steingrube vineyards, as well as from younger GG parcels. The result is an exemplary Riesling with opulent fruit and racy acidity characterised by the limestone soil and fine salty minerality, which clearly deserves its status as a "VDP Erste Lage' much more than that of a supposedly "simple' local wine.
