Tenuta dell'Ornellaia
The Tuscan winery Tenuta dell'Ornellaia was founded in 1981 by Marchese Lodovico Antinori and in between partly owned by Robert Mondavi. Today it belongs to the wine empire of the Frescobaldi family.
A somewhat cooler year with a rather late growing season determines the character of the Masseto 2010, which is not quite as exuberantly lush as in warmer years, but also more delicate and elegant. The wine is still big - but, to use an analogy, stylistically more Renaissance than Baroque. At least by Masseto standards. There is still a lot of pressure on the palate, the finest Merlot fruit accompanied by dark chocolate and almost Christmassy spice. The 2010 Masseto shows enormous depth, as the wine critics' scores testify. Robert Parker's Wine Advocate awarded it 98 points - as did James Suckling.
