Mount Mary Vineyard
The Yarra Valley, in southeast Australia, east of Melbourne. In the 1850s, Swiss settlers recognised the climatic parallels to Burgundy and Bordeaux and planted the first vines. The Mount Mary winery has been here since 1972.
Just like the "Claret' Quintett, the Chardonnay does not spend its maturation period exclusively in barriques. A mix of older and larger barrels (1,500 litres) is used in addition to 30% new French oak. Fermentation and the subsequent eleven months of ageing take place exclusively in wooden barrels, with a hard pressing intended to give the wine structure and depth. Malolactic fermentation is not carried out - the special Mount Mary terroir provides a perfect acid structure right from the harvest. The 2018 presents itself with almost aristocratic elegance: citrus fruit, white peach and nectarines form the fruity base, which is surrounded by hazelnut and a little flint.
